Absolute Fighting Alliance’s AFA 7 Supremacy packed the house at Piere’s Entertainment Center in Fort Wayne, Indiana. This Pro-Am event was cram packed with hard-hitting and swift-submitting action! The amateurs of the evening came to put on a show and did just that. With impressive performances and great sportsmanship, these amateurs proved that professionalism isn’t just for the pros. The professional portion of the event provided some edge of your seat action, as well as jaw dropping endings. With all of that being said, let’s get to the evening’s action.
Amateur Bouts:
Bryant Whitaker vs. Lance Taliaferro for the AFA Lightweight Title
The fighters touch gloves and Taliaferro initiates the fight with a one-two combo, but doesn’t connect. Whitaker follows suit with the same, and Taliaferro shoots in for a single leg but is denied as Whitaker sprawls and delivers a couple of blows to the body of Taliaferro. Whitaker briefly attempts an anaconda choke, but realizing it isn’t in, he pushes off and delivers some hard shots to the head of Taliaferro. Forcing Taliaferro back down to the canvas Whitaker takes his back and goes to work. Taliaferro gets to his knees and tries to sit through to stand up. Out-wrestled, Taliaferro is again forced face down on the canvas as Whitaker sinks his hooks in and flattens him out. Whitaker scores some big shots forcing Taliaferro to turtle. Surprisingly Whitaker jumps up and allows Taliaferro to get back to his feet. After a leg kick by Whitaker Taliaferro charges with a combination. Not only did the combination not connect, but Taliaferro was once again met with Whitakers superior wrestling and was scooped up, carried to the center of the cage and ultimately slammed to the canvas. Whitaker gets full mount and Taliaferro rolls to his belly. With hooks in, Whitaker drops a couple of shots to the head of Taliaferro. As the 10 seconds warning sounds Whitaker reaches in with a Rear Naked Choke forcing Taliaferro to tap with only 2 seconds to go in the 1st round and taking the AFA Amateur Lightweight title.
Ethan Schorey vs. Justin Long
Wasting no time after the touching of gloves Long initiates the fight with an outside leg kick and in return receives a right cross from Schorey. After a full minute of non-stop back and forth trading action of punches, kicks and knees, the fighters reset in the center of the cage. Long reinitiates the action with a couple of outside leg kicks and is once again caught with a right cross, followed by few more shots to the head. Long secures a clinch and delivers a couple of knees to the body of Schorey which initiates more back and forth action. In the clinch of long, Schorey delivers a few well-placed uppercuts and forces long to release the clinch. Once again resetting in the long opens up with a swing and a miss spinning back fist. Both fighters tie up and Schorey goes for a standing guillotine but is unsuccessful. The round comes to an end with Schorey delivering 2 more well-placed uppercuts.
The 2nd round opens up the same as the first, but resulted in Schorey driving Long into the cage where he changes his levels and sweeps and secures a double takedown. Long immediately goes for a Triangle. Unsuccessful, he then tries to sweep Schorey but ultimately gives Schorey full mount. From here, Schorey goes to work with a barrage of punches that leaves Long defenseless against the attack and forces the referee to stop the bout at 1:06 of the 2nd round.
Sportsmanship of the Night
Isaac McNeil vs Miguel Vera for AFA’s Amateur Featherweight Title
Touching gloves and following suit in the evening’s action these amateurs didn’t waste any time getting going. Vera initiates the fight with a kick that is caught by McNeil, which was released when Vera delivered a hard looping right to the face of McNeil. The fight goes to the ground as McNeil shoots in but is thrown to the canvas by Vera. Relentless in his drive, McNeil eventually gets Vera to the cage but is the recipient of a scoop and slam by Vera. With Vera in his guard, McNeil delivers a few body shots. Vera postures up and rains a couple shots before dropping back in the guard of McNeil where he then delivers more shots to the head. The bell sounds and Vera offers a hand and pulls McNeil to his feet.
The 2nd round begins and the fighters touch gloves. McNeil initiates the action with an outside leg kick which is answered with a shot from Vera. McNeil pulls guard and the fighters roll across the cage eventually stopping with Vera in the half guard of McNeil. McNeil is looking for a guillotine, but with Vera’s arm in, he lets go. Eventually McNeil is able to work his legs up and secure a Triangle on Vera. Vera delivers a couple good shots before he is forced to tap at 2:06 of the 2nd Round making McNeil AFA’s Amateur Featherweight title holder.
After the round Vera once again offers a hand and pulls McNeil to his feet ultimately leaving me no choice but to recognize, and award Miguel Vera with Sportsmanship of the Night!
Darby Halferty vs Orlando Lopez for AFA’s Amateur Bantamweight Title
As always Lopez comes out with a smile on his face as they touch gloves. Halferty initiates the fight with an outside leg kick. Lopez advances forward backing up Halferty but not attacking. Halferty then pushes forward with a kick to the left shoulder of Lopez, followed by an outside leg kick as Lopez throws a left hook and drops Halferty. A little hesitant, Lopez pounced and connects with another left but it wasn’t enough to finish Halferty. Halferty gets up and looks as ready as he did before the fight started. Lopez throws a swing and a miss spinning back fist and Halferty begins to push forward. Halferty gets the fight to the ground and lands a solid knee to the body per instructions from his corner. Halferty then lands some solid hammerfists and punches before Lopez is able to get to his feet. After shaking off an attempted rear naked choke Lopez turns Halferty’s chin once again, but this time he doesn’t go down and he answers with an uppercut from a clinch followed by a knee to the body of Lopez. The two fighters go back and forth for a few seconds then Halferty lands an overhand right that backs Lopez up briefly. Halferty lands a couple knees to the body in another exchange but then is caught by yet another left that turn his chin, leaving the crowd woo-ing. Backing up as Lopez moves forward Halferty shoots in and secures a double leg takedown as the ten second warning comes. The end of the first round comes with Halferty in side control.
The 2nd round begins with Halferty throwing a shot to the belly and shooting in and getting the double leg takedown. Lopez sinks in a guillotine but pops out of quickly. Halferty gets Lopez in a crucifix and lands a couple solid shots that force Lopez to bridge and roll that gives Halferty his back. Halferty sinks in a (what appeared to be deep) Rear Naked Choke as Lopez gets to his feet. Lopez falls backwards to the canvas. Halferty lets go of the Rear Naked Choke and gains full mount. Lopez rolls once again giving Halferty his back, the fight ending Rear Naked Choke and the AFA Bantamweight belt by tapping out at 1:04 of the 2nd round.
BUT WAIT, THERE”S MORE… After the next fight we learned that Halferty provided an improper urine test that by default left Lopez the winner of the bout, but also leaving the AFA Amateur Bantamweight belt open.
Jeremy Brown vs Marty Pryor Jr.
This fight starts out with the fighters coming out and touching gloves and brown initiating the fight with an outside leg kick. Pryor follows suit just before receiving a couple of shots to the head. Not affected, Pryor lands a solid front kick that triggers a brief exchange of blows by both fighters. Brown lands a superman punch and goes in for the KO punch. Pryor slips out of the pocket and quickly makes his way to the other side of the cage. Pryor throws a swing and a miss spinning back kick before and exchange of leg kicks by both fighters that eventually resulting in him being dropped by one. Brown once again tries to finish the fight by attacking Pryor as he gets to his feet and makes his way across the cage. The round comes to an end after a couple more ineffective exchanges.
Brown initiates the fight with a swing and a miss right hook that was aimed at the midsection of Pryor. After a couple of exchanges Pryor attempted to get the fight to the ground but was denied by Brown. Pryor goes on the attack and gets Brown up against the cage and lands a solid left to the head of Brown. With a right underhook, Brown turns Pryor and inadvertently delivers a knee to the groin in the process. After about :30 the fight resumes and Brown stays on the attack. Both fighters land a couple good blows in a brief exchange before the fight goes to the ground due to Pryor coming up short on a spinning back kick and falling to the canvas as Brown pushes forward. Pouncing, Brown delivers a few head shots before taking the back of Pryor and pulling him backwards. Pryor spins out and attempts an ankle lock but the end of the round sounds before he can secure anything.
The 3rd round bell sounds and the fighters touch gloves before Brown initiates the action with a one two combo that is blocked by Pryor. Pryor goes on the aggressive and throws a barrage of punches but is forced up against the cage and to the canvas by Brown as he secures a full mount. In a swift spin by Pryor, he goes for another ankle lock where both fighters exchange blows. Brown finally escaping the ankle lock and in a scramble gets full mount over Pryor. As Pryor rolls, giving Brown his back, the end of the round comes and sends this bout to the judges resulting in a Unanimous Decision with all 3 judges in favor of Brown (30-27).
Justin Woods vs Thomas Lahna for the AFA Amateur Heavyweight Title
Once the fighters touch gloves Lahna goes on the attack. Briefly the fighters tie up and Lahna delivers a knee to the body of Woods. Lahna continues to be the aggressor, but is caught by Woods with a solid left hook that drops Lahna. Woods pounces on Lahna and forces the Referee to step in and give Woods the heavyweight Title via TKO at :25 of the 1st round.
Chuckie Geyer vs Thomas Martin for the AFA Amateur Light Heavyweight Title
Instead of the typical touching of the gloves, these to fighters meet in the center of the cage for a hug. Just then, a female voice shouts out “beat his ass”; giving me a laugh as-well as my fan quote of the night. After a period of feeling each other out, Geyer initiates the action by charging and throwing Martin to the canvas and throws some ineffective short shots. Martin eventually gets to his knees but is bombarded with punishing blows by Geyer. After being overpowered, out wrestled and ultimately dominated, Martin eventually makes his way to his feet as the ten second warning comes. The round comes to an end with both fighters looking for an opening.
The 2nd round begins with a touch of the gloves and once again Geyer is the initiator, but this time with a kick. Continuing to be the aggressor, Geyer takes the fight to the ground once again. After a few punches from Geyer here and there he finally explodes as the ten second warning sounds, but isn’t able to finish Martin.
Once again the fighters come out and touch gloves before getting to the action. In a weird exchange of kicks, Geyer receives an inadvertent shot to the groin. Not being a devastating blow, the fight resumes pretty quickly. Geyer comes out and delivers a spinning back fist that lands on the side of Martin’s neck. Geyer continues to be the aggressor and bombards Martin with a flurry of shots that has him turning and trying to get away before being dropped with left hook. Getting back to his feet Martin makes one last run to recover, but is dropped again by a left hook that forces the referee to come in and save him from further punishment and giving Geyer the win and the light heavyweight title at 2:15 of the 3rd Round.
Professional Bouts:
Submission of the Night
Brady Hovermale vs Matt Montalvo for the AFA Professional Featherweight Title
The fighters meet in the center of the cage and touch gloves. Montalvo initiates the fighting with a straight left that is slipped. Hovermale ties up Montalvo and delivers a knee to the mid-section, before getting the single leg takedown. Both fighters go to work, Hovermale from the top, and Montalvo from the bottom. Still pummeling for a dominate position both fighters are landing some decent shots. Hovermale gets a little too far on the side of Montalvo allowing him to roll and get Hovermale’s back. Hovermale is able to get to his feet and turn and tie up with Montalvo. Both fighters deliver a couple blows before Hovermale gets the takedown and landing side control. Eventually Hovermale gets Montalvo’s head to the cage and deliver a few solid shots to the head of Montalvo. Hovermale gains full mount and attempts an armbar, but sits back before throwing his leg over the head of Montalvo, allowing him to walk over the head of Hovermale and gaining a dominant position. Montalvo quickly transitions from side control to full mount, forcing Hovermale to roll to his stomach briefly before rolling to his back and putting Montalvo in half guard. Montalvo delivers a few punches, shoulders and elbows before an impressive explosion by Hovermale that leaves Montalvo verbally submitting at 3:17 of the 1st round due to an armbar. Hovermale takes the Cagecraze.com Submission of the Night!
Anton Talamantes vs Andrew Lambert for AFA’s Pro Heavy weight Title
As the fighters touch gloves, Talamantes rushes in and tries to take Lambert down, as Lambert sinks in a guillotine. Continuing with his drive Talamantes gets the takedown and pops up escapes the guillotine as both fighters scramble for position. Lambert makes his way to his feet and finally gets to square off with Talamantes. Once again Talamantes shoots in for the takedown, but is denied and met with a knee to the face. Lambert pushes off a little too hard as he is swinging for the fences and chasing Talamantes. Bouncing off the cage, Lambert falls trying to throw Talamantes, but makes his way back to his feet before being forced to the canvas by Talamantes. The fight goes to the feet, to the ground to the feet with not much damage being done but goes back to the ground where Talamantes has the back of Lambert and is taking full advantage of it. The referee steps in at 2:10 of the 1st round awarding Talamantes the win and the AFA Pro Heavyweight title belt.
Nick Kraus vs William (Bill) Hill for the AFA Professional Middleweight Title
The fighters come out and touch gloves and immediately Hill starts to stalk Kraus. Kraus looks as if he is going to throw a kick but ends up “jumping” into the arms of Hill. Hill “catches” Kraus and drives him to the canvas. Hill scoots Kraus to the cage where he begins to go to work. Hill gains full mount but allows Kraus to sweep him. Kraus is in the guard of Hill and briefly in a guillotine before popping his head out and going to work himself. Hill is able to walk up the cage and get the fight back to the feet where they exchange knees. Kraus attempts a throw, but ends up on the bad end of it as he is on his back with Hill in full mount. Hill wastes no time going to work and forces Kraus to roll, giving Hill his back. Hill looks to sink a rear naked choke, but Kraus rolls on his back giving Hill full mount once again. Hill then looks for an arm triangle but Kraus spins out and goes for an ankle lock. Hill says two can play that game and goes for an ankle lock of his own. Just then, Kraus lets go and sits up and is driven back to the canvas by Hill. In a guillotine, Hill jumps to side control and delivers a few knees. For the next minute plus, hill continues to control the fight until he is swept by Kraus and finds himself on his back and defending against an explosive barrage of punches. The 1st round comes to an end with Hill pulling Kraus down into him to minimize the damage.
The 2nd round begins with a touch of gloves and Kraus shooting in for a double, but is denied by Hill as he goes for a standing guillotine (arm in). Hill realizes that he isn’t going to finish the submission and drives Kraus to the canvas. After a brief scramble Kraus finds himself on his back and the recipient of a few knees. Kraus sweeps Hill after about a minute of minimal activity Hill sees an opening for an armbar, but Kraus picks him up and slams his way out of it. With both fighters obviously exhausted they scramble for a dominant position. Kraus, on his knees and elbows, rolls and baits Hill into the finishing triangle choke and tapping out at 4:43 of the 2nd round making Krause AFA’s Pro Middleweight champion.

Fight of the Night!
Rocky France vs Brandon Bolt for the AFA Professional Welterweight Title
[fblocker]
This fight was one of the most impressive bouts we have seen live this year. Every round I found myself thinking this is the end. I was wrong! In the middle of the first round both fighters seemed to be exhausted, but somehow dug deep into their reserve tanks and took this fight to a 25 minute back and forth battle. I know that there is nothing I can write that will do this fight justice, but let’s get to me giving it my best.
A few seconds after touching gloves, initial contact is made as Bolt shoots in and ties up with France. With France’s back to the cage Bolt pulls off a sacrifice that puts him in side control. From there, Bolt delivers a few elbows as France is also working from the bottom. As Bolt goes for the full mount, France rolls over, gets to his knees and spins into a seated butterfly guard of Bolt. France makes his way to side control and throws multiple elbows to the body of Bolt. Bolt is able to get an underhook and slip out and get to his feet. Securing a single leg, Bolt picks up France and slams him to the canvas and securing side control once again. France quickly gets out and takes to fight to feet driving Bolt into the cage. Bolt sinks in a guillotine but is forced to let go to defend the takedown. With France still driving his weight forward, keeping Bolt on the cage, Bolt delivers multiple body shots before shooting in and being stuffed by France. After a breather for both fighters they scramble for a dominating position. With both fighters get to their feet, France throws Bolt with a low suplex, but landing in a seated position, Bolt quickly spins and gets back to his feet. Both fighters land leg kicks before the round comes to an end. The fighters touch gloves before heading to their corners.
Round 2 begins with a touch of gloves and Bolt is controls the center of the cage as France circles and looks for an opening. Both fighters take turns being the aggressor but no real damage is done. We continue the back and forth until Bolt catches and drops France with a solid right and pounces to finish him. Taking more shots, France is able to get to his feet but gives Bolt his back. Bolt sees an opening and sinks in a rear naked choke but France was able to gain wrist control and turn into Bolt. France makes his way to his knees and turtles while Bolt sits on his back delivering blows that are mainly to the body. After a warning from the referee France bucks and rolls forward gaining top position in the guard to Bolt. The referee stops the action briefly so France can retrieve his mouthpiece. France works some short shots from guard but no real damage is done. Just before the end of the round, Bolt sweeps France and gets to his knees.
Round 3 begins with the touching of gloves, and France pushing forward with a front kick followed by a hard leg kick. Bolt begins to push forward and France shoots in, but allows Bolt to get an underhook, turning France and throwing him to the canvas, landing in the half guard of France. After a couple of minutes of short shots from Bolt, France is able to work his way to sweep Bolt onto his back, but bolt immediately returns the favor. France quickly slips out of side control and makes his way to his knees while taking the back of Bolt and delivering a solid uppercut causing Bolt to go to his elbows and turtle. France delivers a solid knee to the body, and more shots and hammer fists to the head of Bolt while he continues to protect himself. Bolt throws a couple of elbows back to France while spinning around and landing with France in his half guard. Hearing the ten second warning, Bolt bridges and sweeps France over, briefly getting to his feet before France throws him to the canvas as the bell sounds ending the round.
Round 4 begins with the fighters raising their hands to touch gloves, but not nearly as high as the round before. Bolt controls the center of the cage while France looks for an opening. France opens up with a leg kick and quickly makes his way around the cage. They engage in a few exchanges as France keeps moving his way around the cage as Bolt stalks him. Bolt throws an overhand right that France ducks under and ties Bolt up. Bolt attempts a hip toss, but ends up being denied by France as he gets the takedown landing in side control. While in side control of Bolt, France delivers a couple well places hammer fists and elbows. Still in side control, France goes for a kimura but is too high and allows Bolt to turn and escape. Both fighters come out swinging, but nothing connects. Bolt throws a spinning back fist that lands on the neck of France, but doesn’t seem to affect him as he pushes forward. After tying up briefly France goes for the throw, but somehow lands on his back with Bolt in his guard. Bolt begins to go to work but is eventually swept by France. France, now in full mount, begins to do some work of his own. With the ten second warning already sounding, both fighters begin to scramble. France rolls and gets an armbar that has Bolts other hand making contact with the leg of France (tap) literally milliseconds before the bell. France’s corner celebrates a little prematurely as the referee calls it the end of the round, but not the end of the fight, leaving France furiously making his way back to his corner for the 5th and final round.
Note: With this happening right in front of us, we had the best seat in the house. The tap was during them rolling and came from underneath, which may have obstructed the view of the referee who was standing directly above the fighters.
With their hands lower and lower each round, the fighters touch gloves for this 5th and final round. The round begins in pretty much the same pattern as the others; France moving around the cage as Bolt controls the center. France pushes forward and initiates contact, but in turn gets met with a connecting jab by Bolt as well as a right that drops him to the canvas. Bolt realizing that he just put down his opponent, pounces but isn’t able to finish what he started. With France on his back, and Bolt in half guard, they both seem like they have a mutual need to rest and recover. Bolt throws a few shots to the body, but doesn’t have the power to do any damage. Bolt makes his way to side control and immediately hops into full mount where he throws more short shots. France bucks and rolls giving Bolt his back and a rear naked choke, but once again he’s unable to finish it. After scrambling for position, both fighters make their way to their feet as the crowd roars. With both fighters truly exhausted, they engage in a few exchanges, but none of which are doing any real damage. With 30 seconds left in the bout, Bolt shoots in for a takedown, but it is stuffed by France as he sprawls. The round and the bout comes to an end with both fighters getting to their feet and engaging in an all-out slugfest until the bell sounds. This fight goes to the judges who see it (49-47) (49-47) (49-46) for the winner, and AFA Professional Welterweight champion, Rocky France.
