Core Grappling Challenge
The Core Grappling Challenge was held on Saturday, August 13, in Louisville, Kentucky. The tournament, presented by Helio Soneca, brought in top talent from all over Kentucky and the surrounding states. Local gyms fared very well, with Helio Soneca/Core Combat Sports and Derby City MMA bringing in top three finishes in several divisions. Chris Griffin’s Submission Academy (Louisville) also brought home gold medals. Four Seasons MMA (Lexington), Georgetown MMA, Relson Gracie of Ky, and Gracie Jiu Jitsu of Kentucky also fared well. Soneca affiliates Victory BJJ (Tennessee) and Maverick Training Center (Alabama) left Louisville with dozens of medals between them. Team James Clingerman (Indianapolis), home of CageCraze.com writer Matthew “The Carebear” Perry, also made a strong showing.
With such a large tournament it is hard for individuals to stand out but there were three individuals that deserve recognition. Louisville’s Joe “The Deal” Heink earned two gold medals and one silver. Heink calls Louisville’s Team Haycraft home but represented Helio Soneca/Core Combat Sports in the Core Grappling Challenge. It is very impressive to see a high-level professional fighter that is able to compete successfully in an individual discipline such as Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu.
Another standout from last weekend is Eric Jarvis from Unica MMA in Morehead, Kentucky. Jarvis is an amateur fighter with a record of 5-2 that holds both the Spartan Fighting Championship Lightweight and Welterweight titles. Jarvis won a gold medal in the Adult Middleweight division at the Core Grappling Challenge. Jarvis is sponsored by Intimidation Clothing and will be competing on September 9 at Gruesome MMA 5 at the Eastern Kentucky Exposition Center in Pikeville. Derby City MMA’s grappling wunderkind, Chad “The Beast” Hardy, went into the Core Grappling Challenge and walked out with three gold medals. Chad then went to Chicago the next weekend and won his division in the IBJJ Chicago Summer International Open. The most impressive thing about Chad Hardy is that he is only sixteen years old. Chad plans on competing at NAGA in Las Vegas in September, but needs help from local MMA fans to get there. CageCraze.com is paying for Chad’s registration fees but he still needs money for travel expenses. Chad and his father Dennis are selling shirts to help get “The Beast” to Las Vegas.
