CageCraze.com made its first appearance at Gladiator Elite Cage Fighting at its 19th event held at the Wagon Wheel Theatre in Warsaw, Indiana this past Saturday and was very impressed  The all amateur card proved to live up to its expectations with exciting back and forth battles that really pleased the loud and active crowd. With fighters from Michigan, Indiana and Ohio it was a great showcase of Mid-West talent.

Knock Out of The Night

170Lbs Dakota Pence (Wabash, IN) vs. Jeremiah Lowe (Warsaw, IN)

The evening starts out with the knock out of the night as a very impressive and aggressive Dakota Pence comes out swinging hard and connects early after a flurry and sends Lowe crumpling to the canvas after a barrage of unanswered punches. Pence gets the win via KO in 10 seconds of the first round.

185Lbs. Mark Ulfig (Ft. Wayne, IN) vs. Steven Williams (Paulding, OH)

Ulfig comes out the aggressor landing a couple of leg kicks and a few punches before Williams is able to catch a kick and drive him to the ground where he ends up in side control.  Williams lands a few short shots before he is put back in guard by Ulfig.  Williams works inside the guard and avoids an arm bar attempt from Ulfig to end the round.  Round 2 starts with Williams landing some hard punches to Ulfig’s face, Ulfig returns fire with some hard leg kicks but after a lazy kick attempt is taken down once again.  After avoiding another arm bar attempt Williams disengages and backs away from Ulfig.  Ulfig is able to capitalize and land some hard shots before the bell.  Round 3 begins slowly as both fighters seem to be visibly tired, Ulfig lands some more leg kicks but is met with punches from Williams as he does so.  Ulfig Shoots in for a takedown and finishes into Williams half guard.  Williams is able to reverse the position but ends up in yet again another arm bar.  After escaping for the third time he is able to land some elbows and hard punches from the guard to end the final round. Mark Ulfig is declared the winner by split decision (30-27, 28-29, 29-28).

155Lbs. Clay Belka (Kalamazoo, MI) vs. Drew Walters (Elkhart, IN)

Walters lands a left hook and an inside leg kick before his is slammed to the mat by Belka who lands two hard punches before he is pushed back to his feet and the fight returns standing.  After a flurry of punches and knees from both fighters Belka engages the clinch and gets another takedown, from the up down position Walters attempts a knee bar but is rewarded with hard hammer fists from Belka.  After a scramble to the feet Belka hits a headlock to take his opponent down to close the round.  The second round opens with an exchange of punches and a takedown attempt by Belka which he is able to take his opponent down yet again.  The ref returns them to their feet after a stalemate and Walters uses the opportunity to land some hard punches but is takedown once again where Belka capitalizes with some hard punches from standing over his opponent.  The round ends after a standup and a stalemate on the feet.  The final round starts with some fancy spinning kicks from Walters one of which lands to the face of Belka, which makes him take a bad shot which Walters takes advantage and secures a rear naked choke to end the fight. The tap comes at 28 seconds of the 3rd round.

Submission of the Night

145Lbs. Nathan Ollis (Churubusco, IN) vs. Justin Flemens (Paulding, OH)

The fighters are timid to engage but after a head kick lands from Flemens, an enraged Ollis rushes across the cage to takedown Flemens and is successful. Ollis is put in a deep arm bar by Flemens and the fight looks to be over soon, somehow Ollis toughens it out and Flemens takes mount but is soon reversed back to guard.  After a perfectly setup and executed gogoplata attempt it looks like the fight would be ended yet again, but the super tough Ollis is able to pick up his opponent and slams his way out of the gogoplata.  Ollis’ luck runs out though as he is caught in a triangle that he is unable to escape.  Flemens gets the tap via triangle at 2:29 in the first round.

135Lbs. Derek Cook (Wabash, IN) vs. Ronnie Carr (Jackson, MI)

Cook comes out swinging and pushed Carr into the cage and follows up with a successful double leg.  From the guard Cook lands some hard knees to the midsection of Carr.  Cook backs away and lands kicks to his down opponent’s legs one of which unintentionally makes its way to the groin region of Carr.  After a break in the action, Cook wastes no time as he lands 3 hard shots that sends his opponent to the ground where the ref is forced to stop it after Carr is unable to defend himself.  Derek Cook wins via TKO 2:09 in round 1.
INTERMISSION

185Lbs. Matt Johnson (Napoleon, OH) vs. Wayne Wilkie (Warsaw, IN)

Wilkie is first to land with a leg kick and a jab, he then is able to catch a kick and force the fight to the ground.  In a scramble Wilkie takes an arm bar from the back and is close to finishing but Johnson is able to escape and end up in the top position.  Johnson is able to pass to mount but is not able to do much in the position and ends the round with some short shots from the back.  Round 2 starts with both fighters looking fresh Johnson is able to land some right hands but Wilkie is able to work some hard kicks into the outside of Johnson’s thigh that look to slow down his attack.  Wilkie lands a glancing superman punch and follows it up with another leg kick.  Wilkie continues to work the lead leg of Johnson and is able to end the round with a double leg takedown. The third round begins with a flurry and a nut shot that halts the bout.  After the recovery the fight continues as the fighters continue to battle it out on their feet with Johnson getting the better of the exchanges.  Wilkie attempts a takedown but Johnson prevents it by holding onto the cage and is dinged a point.  Johnson is able to wind up in the guard of Wilkie and lands some punches from inside the guard the fight stays here until the bell.  Wayne Wilkie is declared winner by majority decision (29-27, 28-28, and 29-27).

155Lbs. Jordan Follett (Defiance, OH) vs. Brian Fox (Kalamazoo, MI)

Follett comes out with a head kick and follows with a right hand and a left hook.  Follett is the more active fighter to start the round and puts Fox immediately on the defensive. Fox engages the clinch against the cage and is able to take Follett down against the cage and lands some elbows from the closed guard.  The round ends with a scramble and a guillotine attempt from Fox.  Round 2 begins with a quick flurry from Follett which he ends with a kick to the gut of Fox.  Fox ducks a hook and shoots in for another takedown into the cage. Follett is able to reverse the position as Fox attempts another guillotine.  Follett ends round 2 with some elbows and punches from guard.  Round 3 does not begin because Fox is unable to continue.  Follett is awarded the win via verbal submission at 0:00 of the 3rd round.

Sportsmanship of the Night

170Lbs. Chris Flach (Kalamazoo, MI) vs. Mike Eikenberry (Kokomo, IN)

Eikenberry lands early with a leg kick and a 1-2 that lands to the head of Flach, after a flurry of punches and knees Eikenberry is able to take Flach down but is soon reversed and disengaged from.  From their feet Eikenberry lands another combo and finishes it with a body lock takedown.  Eikenberry easily passes the guard and is able to effectively use ground and pound to end the round.  Round 2 begins with a flurry and Eikenberry engages the clinch against the cage and is hit with a knee to the body by Flach that sends him to his back and is unable to continue the ref stops the fight at 1:29 in round 2.

170Lbs. Terry Cassell (Ft. Wayne, IN) vs. Dave Kreiner (Warsaw, IN)

Cassell lands early with a right straight and the fighters exchange glancing shots and clinch against the cage.  Cassell controls the action against the cage as they battle for position.  The ref separates the fighters and Kreiner comes back with a leaping punch with not much on it after another clinch into the cage, Kreiner is able to take Cassell down and posture up and land some punches before the round closes.  Round 2 begins with both fighters landing leg kicks and exchanging punches with Kreiner getting the better. They end up against the cage again with Kreiner repeating the end of the first round with a clinch takedown to half-guard.  He lands short elbows and punches to wear down Cassell and to end the round.  To start the final round with Cassell coming out the aggressor and pushing the pace, but to no avail as Kreiner is able to slam him to the canvas after a failed guillotine attempt from Cassell.  They scramble to the feet and Kriener is able to land a hard knee to the body as Cassell stands up, the fight ends with them exchanging single shots from their feet.  Dave Kreiner wins via unanimous decision (30-27, 30-27, and 29-28)

135Lbs. Jon Walker (Kalamazoo, MI) vs. Darby Halferty (Garrett, IN)

Walker comes out throwing but doesn’t land cleanly Halferty is able to get a body lock and take his opponent to the ground.  Walker attempts an arm bar but Halferty powers his way out with a lackluster slam from guard. Walker utilizes rubber guard and attempts another arm bar but is shrugged to the side as Halferty transitions to side control and works some ground and pound till the round ends.  Round 2 starts with a flurry from Halferty but nothing landing clean, Halferty shoots in but slips on the canvas, Walker ends up in mount for a second before Halferty is able to escape out the back into Walker’s guard.  They scramble to their feet and Walker lands a knee flush with the face of Halferty that allows walker to take the back but he is unable to hold the position and Halferty ends up in the guard to close the second round.  Third round starts with a body kick right straight combo by Halferty. Walker is able to land some knees from the Thai clinch that fold Halferty and forces him to take a bad shot, Walker winds up on his back but is unable to do anything with the position and is reversed.  After another arm bar attempt from Walker that is unsuccessful Halferty is able to escape and finishes the round with a guillotine attempt. Darby Halferty wins the split (29-28)W (29-28)H  (29-28)H decision to attain the GECF Amateur Bantamweight belt.

MAIN EVENT:

GECF Amateur Welterweight Championship

170Lbs. Trent Hesselschwardt (Defiance, OH) vs. Alex Mejia (Warsaw, IN) (GECF Welterweight Champion)

Both fighters work their ground game

Mejia Comes out with a barrage of short punches to the body followed by knees but Hesselschwardt  says hey I can do that too and returns short punches and knees to the body.  Hesselschwardt presses the action against the cage and lands some hard hooks that force Mejia to turtle up and Hesselschwardt  is able to force Mejia to his back.  Hesselschwardt works inside the guard with short shots to end the round.  Round 2 begins with both men exchanging hard shots with Mejia getting the better after a hard right, Hesselschwardt  feels the need to take the fight to the ground and does so to slow the pace.  The ref stands the fighters up after a stalemate, and Mejia goes to work on the lead leg of Hesselschwardt with some hard kicks.  They throw some single punches and kicks with nothing really landing the round ends with Hesselschwardt getting a running double leg takedown.  Round 3 starts with the fighters standing and banging once again, after Mejia lands a hard knee Hesselschwardt resorts to his wrestling and slams Mejia to the ground with a double leg lift.  After some exhausted ground and pound from guard the ref stands them up, and Mejia goes for broke as he takes it Hesselschwardt with a vengeance but accidently lands a groin shot which halts the bout.  The fight ends with both fighters standing and trading leather.  After a 3 round battle Trent Hesselschwardt wins a unanimous (29-28) decision and takes the GEFC Welterweight Amateur Title.
