Cagecraze.com attended its first MMA BigShow this past Saturday at the always beautiful Wyndham Hotel in Indianapolis. The all amateur card featured rising amateurs David Bernas and Chris Dunn who were set to square off in the co-main event. The event was headlined by two giants, MMA BigShow’s own 7 foot Jason Appleton vs. 6’7 Kirk Miller.
Kevin Groff vs. Johnny Neville 155lbs
Groff comes out with a hard leg kick that is blocked. Neville pulls guard with an arm in guillotine but is unable to finish the submission. Groff takes mount and eventually the back of Neville where he finishes with a rear naked choke. Kevin Groff wins via submission ( rear naked choke) at 2:10 of round 1.
D’Marcus Spencer vs. Vincent Hines 135lbs
Spencer takes the center of the cage and immediately looks for the takedown. Spencer slams Hines to the mat with a double leg takedown and lands in side control. From side control he is able to rain down punches from a modified crucifix position until the end of the round. Round 2 starts with a short feeling out process Spencer returns the fight to the ground with another takedown and transitions to mount where he lands a few punches before the end of the round. Round 3 begins another finely timed takedown from Spencer but the fighters are returned to their feet after inactivity only for a moment before Spencer takes Hines down yet again to end the round. The judges score it 30-27 for your winner D’Marcus Spencer.
KeAndre Howard vs. Cornelius George HW
After exchanging some leg kicks George looks to take the fight to the ground with an outside trip takedown into half guard. From there he lands huge punches as he transitions to mount and finishes the fight with vicious punches that force Howard to tap at 1:56 in round 1.
Daniel Sansone vs. Jameson Sharp 170lbs
Sharp lands a hard right hand which forces Sansone to close the distance and clinch. Sharp gets a quick takedown but only for a moment. After a flurry of hard punches from both fighters they take a moment to regain their breath before the round ends. Round 2 begins with Sansone coming out the aggressor landing a combo followed by a head kick and another combination with Sharp against the fence. During an exchange against the cage an elbow from Sharp accidently hits the forehead of Sansone which creates a small cut. Sharp gets a takedown to end the round. Sansone is unable to continue after the 2nd round. Jameson Sharp wins via TKO (Injury) after the second round.
Ronez McGrady vs. Colt Helton 175lbs
McGrady lands first with a hard right hand that Helton doesn’t like. Mcgrady lands a good combination but is caught with a right hand as he was backing up that momentarily drops him. Helton is unable to maintain mount and is reversed winding up in guard for the remainder of the round. Round 2 starts with McGrady landing a push kick but is taken down for his efforts. Helton works body shots and hammer fists from half guard while looking to pass. Helton transitions to mount only to be reversed by McGrady for a split second before Helton sweeps him back into mount. Round 3 starts with both fighters going toe to toe with Helton getting the better of the exchanges, eventually forcing McGrady into the fence and then to the ground. Helton passes into mount and quickly falls back for an armbar but cannot finish the submission as the round ends. The judges score it 29-28, 30-27, 30-27 unanimously for your winner Colt Helton.
David Bernas vs. Chris Dunn 145lbs
Dunn lands a stiff jab that snaps Bernas’ head back off the bat. Bernas returns the favor with a hard jab of his own. Dunn throws a quick head kick which is partially blocked by Bernas. Bernas eats a few punches as he closes the distance and takes Dunn down. Bernas works from guard till the end of the round. Dunn takes the center of the cage and rushes in for a flurry that forces Bernas to shoot for a takedown. Bernas gets Dunn to his back after a brief struggle. Dunn is able to sweep Bernas and ends up in his guard. Dunn is able to land a few punches but leaves an arm behind which Bernas tries to armbar but ends up running out of time. Round 3 begins with Dunn opening up with some unorthodox strikes and a superman to leg kick combo. Bernas gets caught coming in and is momentarily staggered but Dunn doesn’t pursue his dazed opponent. Dunn ducks under the punches of Bernas and takes him down in the center of the cage and is able to posture up and land some punches to end the round. The judges score the fight 29-28 Bernas 29-28 Dunn 29-28 Bernas for a split decision for your winner David Bernas.
Kirk Miller vs. Jason Appleton HW
Appleton opens with a strong kicking based attack before he lands a hard left hook and follows it up with a right hand that sends Miller to the canvas where he wastes no time to jump in to finish Miller. Jason Appleton wins via TKO just 35 seconds into round 1.
